August 17th: “I’m glad you are safe home, again,” wrote the pencil. “I worried about you while you were gone! You were not well in that house, Annie.” (I had fainted while in New York, that day.) “Please take life easily, for my sake.”

“If I don’t take care of myself,” I replied, “I’ll get to you all the sooner, don’t you see?”

“No, I do not see!” spluttered the pencil. “You must take care of yourself always, until you come where I can take care of you! Don’t say or think such things! They wring my heart. Try, try to be my happy girl! You see, when you are sad, it tears me in two. Don’t give way to grief! It makes it harder for us both. We must be patient and keep remembering God’s great goodness to us in letting us talk as we do together.”

“Do you know our wedding anniversary is next Wednesday?” I asked.

“Yes, I know. I shall be with you, as ever, on that day. You will be at Sunnybank?”

“Yes, oh yes!” I answered.

“Now Fifine is coming to announce your dinner. Eat a good dinner, for my sake! Goodbye, for now.”
